Friends Donate $45,000 for Library Books
Friends executive board president Shauna Stokes presented library director Betty Waznis with a check for $45,000, to be used for books, e-books, DVDs and other library materials, at the January 15 City Council meeting.
The check represents $5,000 from the South Chula Vista chapter of the Friends, $20,000 from the Civic Center chapter, $10,000 from the Book Fund, and $10,000 from the Chula Vista Public Library Fund of the San Diego Foundation.
"We would like to thank our community – the residents and visitors who come to our bookstores and books sales and who donate the books and magazines and other materials," Stokes told the Council. "Without the support and generosity of our citizens, we could not provide the city with these funds." She also noted that the City's general fund for 2012-13 includes $43,000 for ammunition for the police department and only $25,000 for books for the library. "We hope that in next fiscal year's budget, the Council will provide at least the same amount of money for books as it does for bullets," she said. |

The check represents proceeds from used book sales at the South and Civic Center branch libraries and contributions to the 2012 Book Fund, including major donations from Altrusa International of Chula Vista, the Chula Vista Genealogical Society and longtime Friends John and Dorothy Helm.
This is the second year in a row that the Friends organization has raised $45,000 for library books, in addition to its regular contributions for library programs and activities, including the Summer Reading Program, Heritage Museum operations and capital improvements.
