Film Forum Presents Two Free Movie Nights at Civic Center Library

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring a film series, brought to us by Ralph and Carol DeLauro of FILM FORUM.  FILM FORUM shows free films twice per month on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6pm in the Civic Center Library auditorium for the entire fiscal year.  The films on the second Wednesday are contemporary American and foreign films.  The films on the fourth Wednesday are classic cinema and cult movies, with a discussion or Question & Answer (Q&A) session with the audience after each film. Mr. DeLauro will conduct the discussion, which may often take the form of a film class.  The film series is funded by a City of Chula Vista Visual and Performing Arts Grant.

Ralph DeLauro believes film is one of the most important art forms, as well as a valuable record of history and social commentary. He has been sharing his passion for film and teaching “film appreciation classes” all over San Diego County since the 1980s.

You can truthfully say that Ralph DeLauro is "obsessed" with movies, film history and film techniques. This passion for film began when he was about 12 or 13 years old, growing up in Buffalo, New York. He actually used to “sneak into” film classes when he was a college student at Albany University. After college, he began to frequent the “art house” movie theaters in New York City which specialized in older films, foreign films and independent films. His favorite movie theater in New York was “Film Forum”, a nonprofit art house theater in Greenwich Village.

Ralph began showing films on the rooftop of the Historic Lincoln Hotel in the Gaslamp District of downtown San Diego in 1983, when it was an arts community called “Greenwich Village West”. In 1984, he took his projector and his passion for films to the Central Branch of the San Diego Public Library downtown San Diego and began a free weekly film program, which he named “FILM FORUM”, as a tribute to his favorite movie theater in New York.

FILM FORUM became a vital and popular community arts education program, featuring free weekly film presentations and discussions. Over the years, Ralph expanded the film program to include other branches of the San Diego Public Library system.

After more than 30 years of showing films at the San Diego Public Library, Ralph moved his FILM FORUM series to the Chula Vista Civic Center Library in March 2016. The free film programs now take place twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, and are sponsored by the Friends of the Chula Vista Library and a City of Chula Vista Performing and Visual Arts Grant.

For many years, Ralph has dreamt of starting a community-based film festival and is now collaborating with the Chula Vista Public Library and the City of Chula Vista Cultural Arts to plan the first Chula Vista Film Festival, which will take place on June 26, 2019.

Ralph has always thought that San Diego was the perfect place to show films outdoors and in 1991, he joined forces with San Diego business owner Doug Yeagley to establish an outdoor movie theater behind Tops Hair Salon in Mission Hills. The first outdoor movie theater in San Diego, “Cinema Under the Stars” is now in its 28th year.

Mr. DeLauro is assisted by his wife Carol DeLauro, who writes press releases for the films, and has flyers and display board for the films designed, with the help of the Chula Vista Public Library staff, which are displayed in the Library each month.

Ralph and Carol DeLauro are long-time residents of Chula Vista.
