Celebrating Chula Vista's Japanese American Community
Big band music from the 1940s greeted the 300 guests who arrived for the grand opening of "This Land Is Your Land, This Land is My Land" at the Chula Vista Heritage Museum on June 7, 2012.
Downbeat Big Band provided entertainment in nearby Memorial Park as visitors viewed photos and artifacts documenting the history of Chula Vista's Japanese American community. Highlight of the event was the performance of songs from "Allegiance – A New American Musical." The musical, which is set in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, will have its world premiere at the Old Globe in September, with George Takei and Lea Salonga. |
Funding for the entertainment was made possible in part through the City of Chula Vista and the Chula Vista Visual and Performing Arts Grant. Trader Joe's provided wine for the event, and Windy's Flowers provided the centerpieces.
