Centennial Photo Contest
A photograph of the Chula Vista bay front (at right) was the winning entry in the photography contest sponsored by the Chula Vista Heritage Museum in celebration of the city's 2011 centennial. Local history librarian Donna Golden secured a San Diego County Community Enhancement grant to underwrite the contest, with the goal of building the library's collection of local photographs.
Grand prize winner, and the recipient of a $150 check, was Rob Greenaway of San Diego, who also received the third-place award for an aerial shot of the Chula Vista Nature Center at Gunpowder Point. Steve Wood, a Chula Vista resident who is spending the year documenting centennial activities, won first place for his photograph of birds along the Bay Boulevard salt works.
Maria Aguilar of San Diego received the second-place award for her view of the Third Avenue monument sign as well as an honorable mention for a photograph of the historic James Johnson house on F Street. A second honorable mention went to Jonathan Chapin of San Diego for a sepia-toned photo of the Chula Vista marina.
Photos entered in the contest were to have been taken within the City of Chula Vista between November 15, 2010, and April 30, 2011. Categories included: people; streetscenes; scenery and landscapes; recreation and entertainment; culture, festivals and events; architecture; historic buildings and sites; and education. All of the winning photos are posted on the library's website. (Photo courtesy of Rob Greenaway and the Chula Vista Public Library.)
